The History of Women

In today’s society, men and women are practically equal now. Back in the days, women were seen less than men and had no say in society. But in my eyes, I actually see men as the ones less than women. Think about it…How much did women have to fight and endure for what they believed in? How much pain and suffering did they have to go through? They have really come a long way since then, and have worked harder than men have in history. I am a firm believer that women are the strongest sex. Women have to put up with so much, for example: they are expected to look and act a certain way, they have a period every month (which comes with physical and emotional pain), and they are the ones who have to give birth and go through the pain of child labor. What do men go through? Nothing…
Men have always had it easier since the beginning of time. They were always the dominate sex, and always had it their way. They were always able to own property, be able to vote, have a job, and have a say to who they are and what they believe in. Women had none of that. Basically women were seen as a form of property to a man, and men were able to do what they want with women, for example, hit and beat them. Now it is seen as very taboo for a man to hit or beat a woman. What was once not questioned then; is not tolerated now. Back in the days, a man could physically and mentally abuse a woman and get away with it. Now, a woman can press charges and report them to the authorities. Sexual harassment is another example on how men are being restricted in doing things that were not questioned long ago. Men are slowly but surely being overpowered by women.
Now women all over the world can be independent and well educated. I believe we still live in a world of “Survival of the Fittest”, and I believe that women are the fittest sex. Given everything I just stated, on how women had to overcome many obstacles to get to where they are today, imagine what else they can accomplish. In the old days, a women’s job strictly was to be raising their children and being a loving at-home-wife. Now a woman can do that and go to work to get paid for a living. If a woman does not want to live with her child’s father anymore, she can just leave him and live an independent life with her child. This alternative was impossible for a woman to do back in the old days, but now they do not need men to survive. Women now, don’t have to take bullshit from men like they did back in the days. It is nice to see that they do not have strict expectations, like on how they should act, and what they should and should not do. Women are just growing stronger as time goes by, and are leaving men behind.

  1. I understand and concur with your blog. Although I am aware that women have now outranked men in fields of education and employment I never truly took into consideration the other factors you mentioned. More and more women are becoming educated over the percentage of the total amount of men that educated, then in respect to the workforce we have a similar scenario. Today more and more women are averaging higher work incomes over their respective male counterparts nationwide.
Women are indeed a force to be reckoned with, we deal with biological functions that men may deem strange, and impossible all the while fighting for equality with our male counterparts. Indeed in some aspects we have unknowingly surpassed men in the world. The problem is that we may not have even realized it yet. However, this ignorance is still a good thing.
In our fight for equality women have become completely independent of any significant mother and no longer only have to entertain the terrible thoughts having to be a servant to her husband. We now have the freedom to marry for love and not just for financial security, a fact that more and more women everyday are realizing.
It is true that some careers are still more or less stereotypically gender specific such as more men than women are construction workers and more women than men are registered nurses but the women of today are stronger than ever.

  2. Ok… I will have to respectfully disagree with your post. (However, I do recognize the validity of a lot of your points.)

Regarding the first paragraph, I don’t think men and women are “practically equal.” There is still an obvious inequality that is present. Women still don’t receive the same amount of money as males who hold the same jobs at the same positions. Also, there are still expectations for women to stay at home and have “housewivery” be their career.
Regardless, I think reducing one sex to be the “lesser” sex as being very dangerous and counterproductive. I realize that yes, there is/was an inequality and that women did/do “fight and endure for what they believed in,” but I don’t think their pain and suffering should privilege them in any way. Now I know that sounds somewhat misogynistic but hold on a second. I am not trying to keep the men “above” women, nor am I trying to “lessen” women. I am just trying to say that the attitude where one thinks that the other (at this point it doesn’t matter which) to perpetuate the very imbalance that has been established in the first place. I think it is unfair that women are treated unequally and perceived as the “lesser” sex, but I also think it would be unfair and unjust to suddenly reverse the roles and then have men lessened. I know this is rather extreme but it is to showcase my point. It would almost be like saying that the Jews could have their turn with the Nazis, or the African Americans could enslave the Caucasians. To me, Gandhi had it right: “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”
“Men have always had it easier since the beginning of time.” It’s true that men have been/are the dominant sex in society and that it is/was incredibly unfair that women were denied the liberties of owning property, voting, jobs, and other freedoms. However, I don’t think that anybody should be leaving anybody behind and that a power struggle between the sexes to be utterly unnecessary. This goes back to what I mentioned earlier. So if the women had complete power and dominated men, how have things progressed? Without men, and the same goes for men as well but obviously regarding women, the human race would cease to exist. If either sex were allowed to dominate, they wouldn’t get very far as they would rely on the other to procreate and continue existing.
Personally, I believe that with gender, as with every other societal issue (i.e. race, social status, religion etc.) everyone should be provided the same opportunity as their counterpart or their opposite. Awareness and education is the most powerful tool in accomplishing this, and we all just need to learn to coexist, not necessarily adopt a “survival of the fittest” mentality. (Fade out John Lennon’s “Imagine”)
